Slippery roads and high speeds are being blamed for a crash that sent a woman to the hospital in Rock County on Saturday.

It happened around 5 p.m. Saturday. That's when Rock County deputies came upon the scene of a three-vehicle crash on W. STH 81 near S. Merlet Road in Newark Township.

Fire/EMS personnel from the Village of Orfordville and City of Beloit were also dispatched to the scene after an unconscious female was found to be pinned inside one of the vehicles.

The investigation found a 2003 Chevy Tahoe, driven by Diana M. Grenawalt, age 29, of Beloit, had been traveling eastbound on W. STH 81 when she slowed to turn into a driveway. Grenawalt’s vehicle was then rear-ended by an eastbound 2002 Ford Focus, driven by Dezeray M. Eslinger, age 27, of Beloit. After the impact, Grenawalt’s vehicle slid off the road into the south ditch and Eslinger’s vehicle slid into the westbound lane of traffic. Eslinger’s vehicle was then struck by a westbound 2012 Lincoln MKS, driven by Steven L. Geiger, age 60, of Monroe. Eslinger’s vehicle hit a mailbox and came to rest in the north ditch, while Geiger’s vehicle remained in the westbound lane of W. STH 81 blocking traffic.

Eslinger had been wearing her seatbelt prior to the crash, and was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville where she was listed in stable but serious condition with a head injury. Grenawalt and her 4-year-old son were wearing their seatbelts at the time and were uninjured in the crash. Steven Geiger and his passengers, Leon P. Geiger, age 84, Michael J. Geiger, age 22, and Gary A. Becker, age 53, (all of Monroe), were also wearing their seatbelts at the time and were uninjured in the crash.

Speed and slippery road conditions were contributing factors in the crash. Eslinger was cited for Driving Too Fast for Conditions, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance and Non-Registration. W. STH 81 was closed for over three hours while Troopers from the Wisconsin State Patrol reconstructed the crash, which remains under investigation at this time.
