STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) -- A Plainfield man charged with his 11th offense of driving while intoxicated has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect.

A Stevens Point Journal report (http://spjour.nl/X0VwEr ) says a judge this week ordered a doctor's examination for 51-year-old Mark Schulke. The court will review the doctor's conclusions at a status conference Feb. 18.

Portage County prosecutor Cass Cousins says he's never seen someone use an insanity plea for an OWI case before. He also says it's rare for someone to be charged with an 11th offense of the charge.

The criminal complaint says Schulke's first conviction for driving while intoxicated was in 1993. His last conviction was in 2004.

He initially pleaded not guilty to the latest charge but asked the judge whether he could change his plea.

Allow him the "mental defect" defense, and instituionalize him for the rest of his life. This would guarantee he could not hurt anyone..

the only 'mental defect' in place are our lawmakers ....they alone are responsible for allowing anyone with multiple OWI's back into society......period.

there is a difference between insanity and stupidity, which is what he suffers from that. Can you plead stupid? He should...

Wow....check this guy out on CCAP!!! Really?? He is out on the streets!? Shame on you "judges" "D.As" and whomever. I think this guy should be sentenced to YOUR neighborhood if they aren't in prison like they should be. See how safe YOU would feel!!
