UPDATE: Protester Dumps Beer On Lawmaker's Head

VIDEO: Lawmakers Targeted 6pm 9/15/2011

VIDEO: Lawmakers Targeted 10pm 9/15/2011

UPDATED: Thursday, September 15, 2011 --- 9:16p.m.

Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester) released the following statement.

“While I have long been a proponent of free speech, it’s a shame when the expression turns into criminal behavior. Legislators are regularly harassed by certain protesters and this is an unfortunate reminder of what lawmakers have to put up with every day in Madison. Hopefully, the protesters will realize this only hurts their cause with the public.”

Madison Police tell NBC 15 that Miles Kristan turned himself in at 5:30 p.m. Police say they did not arrest him. They issued him a citation for disorderly conduct.

Going forward, some sources inside the Capitol have told NBC 15's Zac Schultz that some lawmakers say after this incident, they may be seeking restraining orders against some of the protesters who've been involved in multiple confrontations.

UPDATED Thursday, September 15, 2011 --- 12:45 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Police are searching for a man who dumped a beer on the head of Republican state Rep. Robin Vos on Wednesday night at a Madison bar, splashing two other Republican lawmakers in the process.

Madison Police did not identify Vos in their report on the incident Thursday, but his office confirmed it was him. The others were Assembly Majority Leader Scott Suder of Abbotsford and Rep. John Nygren of Marinette.

A bartender told police that the man who dumped the beer yelled something like "Money" and "Damn Republicans" during the incident.

Police say all three lawmakers told them the beer dumper swore at them and called them criminals.

After dumping the beer, the man fled but another Capitol employee identified him. Police were attempting to find him Thursday.

Incident Date:
09/14/2011 - 10:24 PM

Address:
22 S. Carroll St. (Inn on the Park)

Suspect(s):
A 26-year old Madison man has been identified as a suspect.

Victim:
Male, age 43, Burlington, WI
Male, age 47, Marinette, WI
Male, age 42, Abbotsford, WI

Details:
Madison Police responded to a disturbance at the Inn on the Park, 22 S. Carroll St., Wednesday night after a man dumped a beer over the head of a state lawmaker.

The bartender said the man yelled out something like, "Money" and "Damn Republicans."

The beer was poured atop a 43-year old Burlington, WI man. It also splashed onto two other state lawmakers.

All indicated the suspect swore at them, and called them criminals.

He was accompanied by a man with a video camera.

The bartender asked the videographer to turn it off. She says following the request, the suspect then took the glass of beer and emptied it onto the lawmaker’s head. The suspect then fled.

The lawmaker, who took the direct hit, indicated the suspect has been harassing him since February, but up until this point, it had only been verbal. He did not know the suspect's name, but a female State Capitol employee, who was with the group, was able to provide police with a name, and said Capitol Police would have his contact information.

The MPD called Capitol Police and obtained a couple of possible addresses for the suspect, as well as a couple of possible phone numbers. Officers attempted to find the suspect, but could not locate him. He will likely face a tentative charge of disorderly conduct.

What a waste of good beer. Maybe they were on fire and he was being a good, helpful person and tried to put the fire out. Still think it was a waste of a beer...

A state worker who popped a balloon that was brought into the capital illegally, capital police posted signs outside of the capital entrances and one of the prohibited items listed was balloons, is facing a year in jail. A crime, albeit very minor, was committed by the person bringing the balloon into the capital and this person was never touched by the worker who popped the balloon. And the worker was suspended, is facing criminal charges, and is being sued by the person with the balloon. Now we have lawmakers in a private establishment minding their own business being, per criminal definition, assaulted by having a beer poured on them. The person(s) who committed the assualt received a minor non-criminal ticket. Am I missing something here about double standards and how public perception of what's right and what's wrong has been skewed. Right is still right and wrong is still wrong and political views should not make it ok or not ok to conduct yourself outside of the law.

The only ones up in arms about this are the Conservatives. Their poor lawmakers...wah wah wah. Just read the comments. The majority are from Conservatives. It's not like he put his hands around his neck and out him in a choke hold. Maybe he should have...THAT doesn't appear to be a crime or even anything that warrants a citation.
