UPDATE: Bill for Damaged Marble at Capitol is $18,000

UPDATED Monday, April 1, 2013 --- 11:22 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A cleaning company blamed for damaging the state Capitol's marble floors is being asked to pay a total of $18,000 for repairs.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says the state Department of Administration believes the damage was caused by battery acid from the company's cleaning machine.

The state said in late December it had fired the cleaning company, Peterson Cleaning, but it was still trying to determine exactly what damaged the marble and how much repairs would cost.

DOA spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says the final restoration bill came out to $18,000. She says the state won't pay the remaining $12,700 it owes the company, and the state is asking Peterson to reimburse an additional $5,300.

A message left with Peterson Cleaning on Monday was not immediately returned.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Administration says Monday it is filing a lawsuit against a cleaning company believed to be responsible for damaging marble floors in the Capitol last year.

Department official Paula Veltum said Monday that Peterson Cleaning Inc. out of Illinois has stained more than 100 marble stones due to leaked battery acid from the company's cleaning machine.

Peterson started doing floor cleaning works in the Capitol last August before the department ended the contract in December.

The department has hired a new contractor to perform cleaning duties.

Veltum says it will cost the department more than $16,000 to polish the stained stones. The work has started on Feb. 4 and will take eight to 12 weeks.

A spokeswoman for the cleaning company declined comment.

Are you positive that Walker hired this cleaning company. Or was the capitol using non-union cleaning crews in the Doyle administration as well?

I would like to know if this is part of Walker's job program? Why would we hire a firm from Illinois to clean the "Wisconsin" state capital? Are there no cleaning companies in Wisconsin?

And the state was worried about the protesters; the state hired the cleaning crew. I have to laugh out loud!
