Use of Force Training

Posted Thursday January 24, 2013 --- 5:15 p.m.

Today the Dane County Sheriff's Department opened its doors to give us and you a look at their use of force training. According to deputies there are numerous tools at their disposal and the situation dictates which tool they use.

Deputy Kelly Rehwoldt says, " If they need to employ deadly force immediately then they employ deadly force. We don't need to try to use pepper spray, a taser or baton. "

There are " 5 Modes of Force." There is some variation from agency to agency. But for the most part every departments use of force chart is similar.

The first tool a deputy has is presence. Them being there diffuses most situations.

Then there's communication, different control and protective alternatives that can be used to overcome different forms of resistance.

Finally there's deadly force.

" 99% of the time officers don't have to use any force. 1% of the time they employ force and then a fraction of that 1% they have to employ deadly force, " says Deputy Rehwoldt. " It's really about taking what the officer learns in the classrooms, about issues regarding the law and what use of force is and what the tools and tactics available to them are. "

Deputies say in the real world a moment of hesitation could be the difference between life and death. In 2012 126-officers and six canines were killed while serving.
