Used Cooking Oil Could Help Shelter in Milwaukee

POSTED: Thursday, November 22, 2012 --- 7:30 a.m.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee company wants Thanksgiving and Christmas cooks who plan to fry their turkey to save the used cooking oil.

Cream City Grecycling takes any type of cooking oil -- like canola, peanut or vegetable -- and converts it to biodiesel. Then they sell it to local gas stations who then add diesel fuel.

The company's head of customer relations, Amanda Mielenz, says cooks generally use five gallons to fry a turkey.

So for the holidays they are asking cooks to donate the oil and they will donate $1 to the homeless shelter, the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, for every gallon they collect.

They plan to accepting donations starting Monday through Jan. 6.

Mielenz says so far this year, they've bought about 500,000 gallons from restaurants, hotels, cafeterias and schools.
