MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A judge has sentenced a Wisconsin man to a total of five years in prison for sexually assaulting his severely abused younger stepsister and another girl in an unrelated case.

Judge Julie Genovese sentenced the 20-year-old Madison man Wednesday to three years for abusing his stepsister and two years for a December 2012 case involving a girl who was 15 years old at the time. The sentences will run consecutively.

She told prosecutors that her father and stepmother kept her locked in the basement for about five years until her February 2012 rescue. They are each serving five-year prison sentences.

Prosecutors say her stepbrother began sexually abusing her when she was 9.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A judge is set to sentence a Madison man convicted of sexually assaulting his starving stepsister and a 15-year-old girl.

The 20-year-old man's now 17-year-old stepsister told police her father and her stepmother kept her locked in their basement for five years and starved her down to 68 pounds. She said her stepbrother tried to have sex with her when he was 13 and later forced her to perform oral sex on him.

A jury convicted the man on two sexual assault charges and a child abuse count this month.

He pleaded guilty in July to another sexual assault charge after prosecutors accused him of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

The man faces up to 146 years in prison when Judge Julie Genovese sentences him Wednesday.

UPDATED Friday, February 21, 2014 --- 12:44 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Wisconsin jury has convicted a 20-year-old man on three counts of sexually and physically abusing his stepsister while her parents starved her and kept her in the basement.

The girl was just 68 pounds when she fled the family's home in 2012.

Prosecutors said the man sexually assaulted the girl starting when she was 9 years old because he thought he could get away with it. A physical abuse charge was supported by a deep scar on the girl's stomach.

The judge's secretary confirmed Friday that jurors delivered their verdict shortly after midnight.

Defense attorney Ronald Benavides didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

UPDATED Friday, February 21, 2014 --- 1:47 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A jury has convicted a 20-year-old Wisconsin man of sexually and physically abusing his stepsister, who was just 68 pounds and barefoot when she fled their family's home two winters ago.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the verdict was handed down just after midnight Friday.

Prosecutors said the man was 13 and his stepsister was 9 when the first of two assaults occurred.

The girl ran away from home in February 2012. She told investigators her father and stepmother locked her in their basement and refused to feed her. They were convicted on child abuse charges at separate trials.

Her stepbrother's defense attorney had argued the girl's account couldn't be believed because it had inconsistencies.

UPDATED Thursday, February 20, 2014 --- 8:46 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a Wisconsin man sexually assaulted his then 9-year-old stepsister because he didn't think he would get caught.

Prosecutors say the now 20-year-old man attacked the girl twice, starting when he was 13. When the girl told her father and stepmother, they moved her into the basement with boarded up windows.

The girl told investigators the couple kept her locked up and starved. She was 68 pounds when she fled the home in 2012 and was found walking barefoot in the middle of winter.

Defense attorney Ronald Benavides says the teen has given conflicting statements about when the assaults happened, calling her accusations into question.

Jurors began deliberating in the case Thursday afternoon.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin prosecutors say a Madison teen found walking barefoot and in her pajamas two winters ago had been sexually assaulted by her stepbrother starting when she was 9.

The teen fled her home in February 2012 and later told doctors at a hospital where she was taken that she had been starved and sexually assaulted.

Assistant Dane County District Attorney Matt Moeser said the now 20-year-old man (Joshua Drabek) in the case assaulted his stepsister when he was 13 and the girl was 9. The man pleaded no contest to sexual assault charges in November 2011 in a case involving a different girl.

Defense attorney Ronald Benavides told jurors to keep an open mind when listening to testimony from witnesses. The trial is set to continue through Feb. 28.
