VIDEO REPORT: Wisconsin Hikers Survive Dangerous Trek

"It was pouring down the boulder that he was laying on, you know it was, there was blood everywhere," described Jay Ripp.

It was supposed to be a fun trip to Colorado for a group of Wisconsin guys seeking adventure."We saw the back side and it was all rocks," said Nate Blasco, one of the five hikers, describing that they chose to take the harder route down.

The five guys split up a little bit. Matt Beiswanger went free climbing and was about 15-20 feet in the air when all of a sudden, the rock he was on started to slide away. "I just remember falling backwards and I just kind of went to the side so I didn't get crushed," he said.

He tumbled to the ground as the rock rushed toward his friends.
"It was right in line with Nate," said Ripp. "I screamed like, 'no'!....By then it was too late. It landed on Nate, it was probably a 700 pound boulder." "I don't remember ever seeing a rock coming down at me, or you know, actually getting hit by it," said Blasco. "Basically my next memory after that is emergency room."

Blasco suffered a broken nose and arm, a crushed eye socket, a broken rib, a lacerated liver and a collapsed lung. Beiswanger's fall left him with a concussion, a broken arm and multiple leg injuries.

They managed to call 911, but had to wait about four hours for rescuers to find them. "The only way they could get the rescue team in there was to take pictures of our surroundings and have somebody kind of indentify where we were," said Blasco.

The two were strapped on stretchers and trekked up the mountain, so they could be flown to an area hospital, where they spent more than a week.

Both say they're happy to be here--and they won't be slowing down."We've got good guardian angels which is why we can afford to keep going on adventures," said Blasco.
