MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is looking for sponsors to feed low-income children this summer.

In 2012, the 177 sponsors in the food service program who contracted with DPI provided 2.4 million free meals to children during the summer months. The sponsors operated 728 sites statewide last year.

Sponsors include public and private nonprofit schools, camps, local governments and libraries. The DPI says interested sponsors will find more information and an online application on its website. New sponsors are required to attend a training session in Madison April 3.

The DPI has administered the federal program since it began in 1975.
