MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Newly hired police and firefighters would be forced to pay more for their health insurance and pension benefits under changes added to the state budget.
The Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee voted early Friday morning to require any newly hired police officers or firefighters to pay 5.8 percent of their pension benefits and 12 percent of their health care costs.
That is the same as what all other public workers would be forced to pay under a bill passed earlier this year that also took away nearly all collective bargaining rights. Police and firefighters were exempt.
The committee also voted along party lines to bar police and firefighters from collectively bargaining over the design and choice of their health care plans. The cost of the plans would remain open to negotiating.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Newly hired police and firefighters would be forced to pay more for their health insurance and pension benefits under changes expected to be added to the state budget.
Co-chairs of the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee say the Republican-controlled panel on Thursday will approve changes that will force any newly hired police officers or firefighters to pay 5 percent of their pension benefits and 12 percent of their health care costs.
That is the same as what all other public workers would be forced to pay under a bill passed earlier this year that also took away nearly all collective bargaining rights. Police and firefighters were exempt.
Rep. Robin Vos says police and firefighters would retain their bargaining rights, but new hires would have to pay more for their benefits.

i dont think my job is any harder than the "private sector" jobs but here's the reality. I work holidays, weekends, and nights when the "private sector" is tucked in sleeping. I know I signed up for this job and I love what I do but when was the last time the "private sector" had a gun put in their face?? Does the "private sector" require a college degree or monthly training outside the already crappy hours we have??? NOPE!! The real problem here is the goverment has handed out money to people who contribute nothing for WAY TOO LONG!! So who do they turn to? The hard working people that pay taxes, go to work everyday, and contribute to society. Why should I pick up the tab and continue to take cuts because the goverment refuses to stop handing out money?? I'm not sure what people think but police DO NOT make that much money!! Is $40,000 a year (before the new Walker cuts) too much for when you consider the risks police take everyday? I'll bet my wife and kids would disagree!!! If you want me to make the same amount of money as a someone without a college degree that has every weekend off and every holiday off consider me greedy!!
Jeff - you could also have chosen to be a police officer or firefighter. I have one of each in my family, and I have worked in the private sector all of my career. Believe me, their jobs are very different than ours. Dangerous 24/7 (most are "on" even when off duty). Try it for awhile, then provide your feedback on benefits please.
@Jeff- You could have taken a job like them too, bet you wouldn't be complaining about it then. These people were hired with these benefits and now they are trying to be taken away from them. How about Walker pay for his health ins instead of US tax payers paying for it for the rest of his life. The budget problems are not all the State/County/City workers faults. These people have given up many raises to keep their benefits and their pay is not a great as most of you think it is. They deserve this. Leave the Police and FF alone. Sounds to me you are a little mad you can't retire after 30 years. Guess you should have done better with your life!
