Cost of smoking increases Tuesday
(AP) -- A common New Year's resolution to quit smoking could become even more common Tuesday when Wisconsin's cigarette tax increases by a dollar.
Smokers will pay $1.77 in state taxes on every pack of cigarettes.
ThedaCare smoking cessation educator Beth Murphy says interest in quitting has grown in the last month, and there's been a common theme. Murphy says money has become a bigger reason to quit.
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids predicts the higher tax will stop nearly 66,000 Wisconsin children from starting smoking. And it will make 33,300 smokers quit.
The campaign estimates the state will save about $1.5 billion in long-term smoking-related health care expenses.
