4 Whooping-cough Cases

Posted: Saturday, December 24, 2011 --- 2:18p.m.

ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) -- Four cases of whooping cough have been reported in far northern Wisconsin.

Cases have previously been reported in Milwaukee, Racine, Menomonee Falls and Eau Claire.

An Ashland Daily Press report (http://bit.ly/vvvDFD ) says the most recent cases were in the city of Ashland.

County health administrator Cyndi Zach says all four were students in the Ashland School District, and all four had already been immunized. She says the immunization is only about 80 percent effective.

Zach says the four students are receiving proper treatment. She also says the timing is fortunate, as schools are going on extended holiday break.

Whooping cough is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system. It's generally treated with a five-day course of antibiotics.
