5,000 Kids Injured In Falls From Windows Each Year

Posted Monday, August 22, 2011 --- 8:10 a.m.

CHICAGO (AP) -- New research suggests the number of injuries to children and teens from falling out windows means it's not just an urban high-rise issue.

The research found that many children fall from first- and second-story windows.

More than 5,000 U.S. children and teens are injured each year in falls from windows, according to a study appearing Monday in the journal Pediatrics. It's the first nationally representative study of such injuries.

Dr. Gary Smith of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio says preschoolers are at the highest risk and they suffer more head injuries than older children. The study's senior author also says that's because they are mobile, curious and don't recognize the danger.

Fewer than 1 percent of the cases led to deaths, but the researchers say the tally could be low.

The average yearly injury rate was about 7 injuries per 100,000 children.
