It's something we all have, and it's something we all need -- blood.

Michelle Meekma-Yaun with the Red Cross in Madison says right now they need blood donations more than ever.

"People are taking vacations during the summer months, they're doing a lot of traveling, and also the high schools and colleges are out of session."

Summer is traditionally a time where blood supplies run low, but Meekma-Yaun said this time around is especially bad.

The American Red Cross put out an "urgent alert" a few weeks ago, and strongly encourages donors to give blood.

It makes the need for frequent donors like Brendon Panke even bigger.

"It's something that is pretty easy on me and there is an obvious need for it especially in the summer," Panke explained as he was laying on the bed actively donating.

He has been doing it since is undergraduate years, and says it's an easy process.

"This is a problem that's definitely easy to help out with, and you can do it pretty much any day of the week," he said.

There are blood drives pretty much every day in the greater Madison area between August 16th and the beginning of September, in an effort to get more blood during the last weeks of summer.

The requirements for being eligible are quite simple.

Meekma-Yaun says as long as you weigh at least 110 pounds, are in good overall health and at least 17 years old, you can donate.

In Wisconsin even 16-year-olds can donate with parental consent.

If you're wondering if it hurts, Meekma-Yaun describes it as no more than "a little pinch".

The whole process from start to finish takes about an hour, and the physical blood drawing anywhere between six and ten minutes.
