CDC: Nearly 1 In 4 Babies Born To Unwed Cohabitors

Posted Thursday, April 12, 2012 --- 7:20 a.m.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Health officials say nearly 1 in 4 babies are born to unmarried couples who are living together, a significant jump from a decade ago.

The government previously said more than 40 percent of births are to unwed mothers. But a report released Thursday offers new detail showing most unwed births occur in cohabiting couples.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study was based on face-to-face interviews with more than 22,000 men and women during 2006 through 2010.

About 23 percent of the reported births were to unmarried heterosexual couples who were living together when the child was born. That was up from 14 percent when a similar study was done in 2002. The CDC did not speculate on reasons for the increase.

I grew up in a family where you don't have kids before marriage. And I'm so glad I did. I love being married and that we are good examples to our children. Everyone is different but I see to many people with multiple kids from different people and what a bad example to the kids. The dads aren't there in some cases so sad. My kids deserve 2 parents

I don't think that marriage signifies the parents will be responsible, although it's a small indicator. Many people have seriously troubled marriages and some think having a child will settle the sitiuation when in fact it almost never does.

Sad. Where does this leave the child when they are no longer "cohabitating"? A messed up child that when the schools asks who do I contact they give a litany of answers. Then people wonder why kids are so messed up????
