UPDATE: Deal announced on income tax cuts, voucher schools

UPDATED Wednesday June 5, 2013 --- 3:38 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican legislative leaders say they have reached agreement on public school funding, expanding private school vouchers and cutting income taxes.

The leaders announced the agreement Wednesday morning around 1 a.m., following more than 10-hours of closed door meetings.

The plan will include roughly $680 million in income tax cuts over the next two years, more than double what Gov. Scott Walker first proposed.

The deal also includes expansion of private school vouchers statewide, instead of in just nine districts as Walker called for. However, enrollment would be capped to 1,000 students statewide, instead of unlimited after two years as Walker wanted.

Public schools would also be permitted to increase spending by $150 per student in each of the next two years.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Legislature's budget committee is slated to take votes on income tax cuts, private school voucher expansion, public education funding and Medicaid.

Those major pieces of Gov. Scott Walker's budget were on tap for the final scheduled day of Joint Finance Committee meetings on Tuesday.

Walker and Republican legislative leaders have been working in secret to strike deals that will get the budget through both the Senate and Assembly. Republicans have a majority in both houses.

Democrats are calling on Republicans to reject the voucher expansion and tax cut plans and instead invest more money in public schools.

Democrats also want Republicans to accept a federally funded Medicaid expansion, something Walker has rejected and has said he expects to be passed by the Legislature.
