American Red Cross gives thanks of its own with holiday pies to presenting donors at participating blood drives
MADISON, Wis. (November 15, 2011) – This Thanksgiving, you can give a hospital patient another reason to be thankful by donating blood or platelets. A single blood donation can help save up to three lives and give patients in need another opportunity to celebrate holidays with their loved ones.
During this season of giving thanks, the American Red Cross is thanking those who help patients in need by offering presenting donors a complimentary pie or t-shirt at participating area blood donation centers and special blood drives during the week of Thanksgiving.
“As our anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday grows, we at the American Red Cross take pause to recognize the generosity of our blood and platelet donors,” said Greg Novinska, CEO of the Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region. “With each blood donation, hope is given to patients and their families.”
While the need for blood is ongoing, the supply isn’t – especially around the holidays. In the spirit of the season, give thanks and give hope to someone in need this Thanksgiving by donating blood.

High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
About the American Red Cross
Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
