NEW YORK (AP) -- A study in mice is giving hope for a new way to protect against infection with the AIDS virus. It appeared to give mice complete protection against HIV, and scientists hope to start testing it in people within a couple of years.
Researchers injected mice with a protective gene, an idea that's been tested against HIV infection in animals for a decade. Experts were impressed with the results and say it offers a possible alternative to an imperfect human vaccine that's still being fine-tuned.
The new research was reported online Wednesday by the journal Nature.
