MADISON--"It's as I was planning my retirement from the Dane County Sheriff's Department that I learned I had breast cancer," said Joan Kamholz.

Since her diagnosis, Kamholz has spent her days batting for a cure.
"It's huge because what we started here just at the local level, Dane County Sheriff's Department and then we took it Dane County county-wide, and we took it state, is now going to be nationally," she said.

Kamholz is the founder of 'Justice for the Cure'. It's a partnership between law enforcers and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
"Those funds staying here, coming back to the community for education and for screening and science to find a cure," said Kamholz.

And this week her organization will be making the jump from the minors to the majors. "This week our first national conference is in Milwaukee," she said. "It's called the NAWLEE: National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives."

She says 'Justice for the Cure' has been picked as the charity to receive the funds from the conference's charity softball game. Kamholz herself will be stepping to the plate to play. And she'll be making a presentation at the conference that she hopes will help propel the organization country-wide. "I'm tickled that it's traveled that far and I'm so excited with the opportunity of it even going further," said Kamholz.

She says the more people that join the cause, the bigger difference they can make. "I just want this snowball just to keep growing and growing and growing out of control, that would be okay," she said.

If you'd like to support and attend that charity softball game it'll be on August 4th. Kamholz says you can contact the Madison Susan G. Komen office for information on purchasing tickets.
