Nutritionist: Don't return to fatty ground beef due to turkey fears

NEW YORK (AP) --Many diet experts recommend ground turkey meat over ground beef as a lower fat option, but there are new concerns about turkey because of a salmonella outbreak that has killed one person and sickened several dozen others since March.

Karen Congro, a nutritionist at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, hopes people don't switch back to ground beef, but explore other options. She says consumers who are wary of ground turkey because of the Cargill recall could ask a butcher to freshly grind poultry.

She says the recall also presents an opportunity to try vegetarian substitutes sold in the stores or buy lower fat meat options like bison or buffalo. Congro hopes people will think of turkey alternatives and limit the amount of beef they eat.
