From the Jefferson County Health Department:

Jefferson County Health Department is offering free test kits to promote Radon awareness and to assist residents in detecting Radon in their homes.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas found in soil. Exposure to elevated levels of Radon can lead to lung cancer. Over 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused by Radon each year making it the second leading cause of lung cancer.

You cannot detect Radon in your home; it is colorless, odorless and tasteless. The only way to know your Radon level is to test your home.

Free test kits are available at the Jefferson County Health Department, 1541 Annex Rd., Jefferson; Dodge County Health Department, 143 E. Center St., Juneau; and Watertown Department of Public Health, 515 S. First St., Watertown. Questions can be directed to 920-262-8094.

Sub-slab depressurization systems offer some of the most cost effective means to reduce indoor air concentrations of radon, should your tests be found to be high. Our company, Air Quality Control Agency, Inc., works very hard to keep our prices low so that as many people as possible can have a radon system installed in their homes. We have installed over 50,000 of these systems in 23 states, and continue to work with individuals, businesses, and cities, including many people in Madison, to help them to get the help they need. It is encouraging to see that test kits are being offered for free by the Health Department. We hope that our company can help you out if your test results come out greater that 4.0 pCi/L. Maybe Channel 15 can do a piece on what can be done should test results come out high.
