Melee Breaks Out at Game

Posted Monday --- February 4, 2008 ---

A 17 year-old Madison resident is facing charges after a weekend basketball brawl.

It happened Saturday afternoon at the Warner Park Community Center.

A witness told police it started after some -quote- "trash talking" among players and people in the stands.

Up to 50 people were involved in the fight.

17 year-old Xavier Michael Bridges was arrested for breaking a 35 year-old man's nose.

The MSCR director says this is the first time they've had problems with the basketball program.

A letter will be sent home with all students -- reminding them of the rules.

Two basketball teams have been suspended for the rest of the season.

I have been at Warner park during these basketball games and there has been trouble before (a few years ago). When i was there it was the adult that got removed. Most of these kids play to keep off the street and keep busy. Before everyone condemns this child we should know everything that happened and all that were involved. It wasn't just this one boy.

This kind of behavior is totally unreal !!! They try to promote places for kids or adults to have sport programs and this is what happen's ? What a waste of effort and Tax dollars !! They would whine like crazy if they would discontinue these Programs. There is always a bad apple in the crowd to bad it always ruin's things for the GOOD ONES ..

There were 50 people involved. Only Xavier got in trouble? What was a 35 year old man doing fighting with a teenager?

Look at the hard ship that Parents face when they are trying to discipline their kids. They are being threatened with jail etc. Give more power back to the parents. From what i have heard and witnessed, that a Parent can face jail time when they discipline their kid. I have seen that there are cases that a parent goes overboard, but those cases are rare. More spankings are waranted. What about a scared straight program. Each case should be handled seperately. That Teen needs to know that we all have to follow the law.
