State officials are warning consumers about an e-mail scam that uses fake funeral announcements to infect your computer with malware.
The e-mails (an example is pictured above) note only that an upcoming service will be held for a “friend,” along with a link for more details.
Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection say that if you receive a similar e-mail, delete it immediately. Do not click the link in the e-mail.
The link will direct your Web browser to a foreign website, where a .zip file will automatically be downloaded. If the .zip file is opened, malware will be installed onto your computer.
One e-mail received by a Wisconsin resident claimed to be from Eubank Funeral Home & Cremation Services, which is a legitimate company in Texas. The company has since put a warning on their website to warn the public about the scam.
Similar e-mails may use the names of other businesses.
