East Johnson Street reconstruction expected to cause 'severe' delays

Madison City officials say that this summer's reconstruction project on East Johnson is expected to cause severe traffic delays.

The project is scheduled to begin the week of May 5th for E. Johnson St. from N. Butler Street to N. Baldwin St.

Only one lane of traffic will be maintained through the construction zone at peak traffic times.

Drivers should strongly consider finding alternative routes over the summer. A signed alternate route for Johnson Street utilizes Bassett Street, West Washington Avenue, the Outer Loop and East Washington Avenue.

Metro Transit will have several routes detoured and limited stops on East Johnson Street. For details on those route changes visit the Metro Transit Detours webpage: http://www.cityofmadison.com/metro/detours/

All businesses in the area will remain open during the reconstruction, and pedestrian access will be maintained.

Construction is expected to continue for about six months. For updates on the project, click HERE.
