Madison Police say someone pretending to be a lieutenant with the Dane Co. Sheriff's Office recently tried to scam two west side citizens.
Both separate but similar cases happened in May. One involved a 85-year-old woman and the other involved a 62-year-old man.
Both heard from a caller who claimed to be “Lt. Brian Harris” who said he was with the sheriff's department's warrants division. He told the citizens they had missed jury duty and that warrants for their arrests had now been issued.
He went on to say they could avoid jail time by immediately paying a $493 fine. The woman and man both figured out quickly that it was a scam.
In both cases, the fake lieutenant called the victims using the number (608)293-3516. That number has now been disconnected.
