Release from Monroe Police Department:

The Monroe Police Department has received reports of numerous postings on social media, including Facebook, indicating multiple alleged attempted child enticements in and around the Monroe area. Postings have included many unsubstantiated, inaccurate and exaggerated statements.

The Monroe Police Department is currently investigating reports that in two instances, young children have been contacted by individuals in circumstances that have led to suspicion.

On August 25, 2012, at about 8:40p.m., in the 1800 block of 10th Street, near downtown, a 4 year old girl was reportedly talked to by individuals in a green sedan with dark tinted windows. One individual was reported to have gotten out of the vehicle. The child's father, across the street, yelled at the vehicle, and the person got back into the vehicle, and the vehicle left. The father told police that the person who got out of the vehicle, a female, asked the child if the child was all right. This report is complicated by the fact that the police were not notified until an hour after the incident, and then by the other parent.

On August 29, 2012 at about 11:15a.m., Monroe Police received a report that a 7 year old girl was allegedly contacted by a male driver in a green sedan, in the 600 block of 17th Avenue, on Monroe's north side. Reportedly, this male driver asked the girl if she needed a ride home, after pulling into a driveway near her. The girl ran off and went home. This report is again complicated by the fact that prior to calling police, a male resident of the girl's home and a group of children walked around the neighborhood looking for the vehicle.

Police are continuing to investigate both incidents. The descriptions of the vehicles in both incidents are similar, and police are investigating to see if the incident are related.

The investigation has been hampered by the many versions of the incidents being told on Facebook and other social media, prompting phone calls, and tying up law enforcement resources.
