National Safe Boating Week
May 19-25, 2012

Madison, WI. May 16, 2012 – When the weather warms up, thousands of Wisconsinites head to the lakes and rivers for summer fun. This year, agencies from across the State of Wisconsin are teaming up to kick-off the boating season and make 2012 Wisconsin’s safest summer yet on our waterways.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the WI Department of Natural Resources, along with Fire Departments from Madison, McFarland, Maple Bluff and Middleton will be making the rounds to Dane County boat landings on Saturday, May 19th. Experts will be on hand to talk with boaters and educate them on the top three things every boater should do to make their season a fun and safe experience.

1.Attend a boating safety class
2.Have your boat checked for required safety equipment
3.ALWAYS wear a life jacket

In addition to getting their safety message out, the participating agencies will have their own equipment on display for the public to enjoy. If time allows, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering free vessel safety checks for trailered boats only. These examinations take approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete and can help reduce your insurance costs.

The schedule for Saturday’s safe boating kick-off is as follows:

8:00 to 9:30 am – Babcock Park boat landing, US Highway 51 in McFarland
10:00 to 11:30 am – Olin Park boat landing, John Nolen Drive in Madison
A news conference featuring Sheriff David Mahoney will take place at 10:30 am.
Noon to 2:00 pm – Warner Park boat landing, Northport Drive in Madison
