At the conclusion of those services, there will be a processional to the Junction Cemetery on North John Paul Road. Milton -- Two accidents, in two hours, along I-39/90 Thursday night. The first happened just before 9 p.m. off of exit 171 near Janesville. A semi-trailer hit the guard rail, spilling diesel all over the interstate.

"The back up at the time was approximately eight miles," said Sergeant Michael Vasquez, with the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Then, just down the road at 10:31 p.m. a second crash.

"During the course backup, another semi came in to the back end of the backup, and struck approximately seven other vehicles," said Sergeant Vasquez.

Inside one of those vehicles was former Milton Police Chief, Terry Hawkins. He was driving home from a baseball game in Beloit when he was hit, and killed.

Lieutenant John Conger, worked under Hawkins for 13 years.

"I think what I learned from him was, take your job seriously, and always set goals," said Lieutenant Conger. Also mentioning, the former chief was a mentor to him, and others on the force.

"He was a very decent person to work for, dedicated and passionate to law enforcement," said Lieutenant Conger.

As the small town mourns, outside of the building that Hawkins spent his day's serving the community, flags fly at half staff in honor of the former chief.

"The entire family was just part of the fabric of Milton, and it's just tragic to lose that," said Lieutenant Conger.

Hawkins leaves behind his wife, son, and daughter-in-law.
