Rock County Sheriff’s Office Receives Grant To Crackdown on Drunken Driving

Posted Wednesday, December 15, 2010 --- 11:28 a.m.

Release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office:

Rock County Sheriff’s Office will receive a $30,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation/Bureau of Transportation Safety to crackdown on drunken driving. The funds will be used to pay for officers’ overtime and to purchase new equipment for improved enforcement.

Wisconsin has the highest rate of drunken driving in the nation. More than 26 percent of Wisconsin adults who were surveyed admitted that they had driven under the influence of alcohol in the previous year, according to a nationwide study by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services released in April 2009. There were more than 44,000 convictions for drunken driving offenses in Wisconsin last year. In 2009, alcohol-related crashes killed 238 people in Wisconsin and injured nearly 4,000.

Alcohol related crashes are entirely preventable:

-Choose a sober designated driver before you start drinking
-If you’re feeling buzzed, you likely are over the 0.08 limit and should not drive
-Rather than risk an arrest, or even worse a crash, take a taxicab or ask a sober friend to drive you home
-Save a life – don’t let your friends drive drunk
-Some taverns and restaurants have programs to provide patrons with a safe ride home. Visit www.tlw.org

“Drunken drivers are deadly threats not just to themselves but to everyone else on our roads,” said Sheriff Robert Spoden. “That’s why we don’t give them warnings or accept excuses when we stop drunken drivers. If you’re over the limit, you’ll be arrested. The decision to drive while impaired will likely be one you’ll regret the rest of your life.”
