Scam Alert: Caller tries to scam Madison pastor

Posted Tuesday, March 4, 2014 --- 4:16 p.m.

Madison Police say a scam artist tried to dupe a Madison pastor out of money by posing as a parishioner in need of help.

The pastor of St. Bernard Catholic Church on Atwood Ave. told officers he received the call Saturday.

The caller said he was a member of the church and that he, his wife and two daughters were stranded in Oklahoma City following a holdup. He asked to have money wired to him.

The pastor said the caller was very convincing, but he checked the church records to see if the man was actually a member. When the pastor asked the caller for a home mailing address, he hung up.

While the pastor didn't fall for the ruse, he wanted other clergy to be aware of the scam.
