From the Dane County Sheriff's Office:
Madison, WI. September 7, 2012 – The Dane County Sheriff’s Office has received several complaints recently regarding asphalt construction scams.
The most recent complaints have come from residents in the southeastern part of the county, however the Sheriff’s Office wants to caution all citizens about this potential scam. Thus far, the complaints have come from residents who have not fallen prey to the traveling construction crews, but there is a potential for additional contacts that have not yet been reported.
The Sheriff’s Office typically receives these types of complaints in the spring and fall. The crews have a pattern of going door to door in neighborhoods claiming to have leftover asphalt from a job they completed nearby and offer the home or business owner a “good deal” to repair their driveway or parking lot. In general, they are working with undesirable materials, and when the work has been completed, the property owner is given an exorbitant bill.
At times, these crews have been intimidating and will target the elderly. If you or someone you know is approached by one of these crews, decline their services and if possible, write down the license plate of the vehicle. If you have an incident you’d like to report, please call (608) 266-4948, which is a non-emergency number for the Dane County Communications Center.
