Scam Alert: Darlington Woman Loses $1,600 in Dog Scam

Posted Friday, December 28, 2012 --- 12:42 p.m.

Information from the Darlington Police Department:

Today, DPD investigated a scam. A Darlington woman bought a dog online and it turns out the entire transaction was a scam that originated overseas. With the cost of the dog and shipping expenses her total loss was $1,600. This happens all too often. DPD encourages everyone to be extra cautious when dealing with ebay, Craigs List, or any other online resource for buying items from unknown individuals. While they purport to be from within the United States, often times they are from overseas.

Do extra research before clicking on that purchase button. For example, one can conduct reverse searches of addresses and phone numbers on the internet to determine their origin. One should also question the sellers to listen for clues of their whereabouts. A foreign accent is a red flag. Improper English/grammar in email communications is another red flag. If there is any doubt in your mind, do not make the transaction.

As we have said before, you must protect yourselves because there is nothing the police can do once your money is gone overseas.
