VIDEO REPORT: UW-Madison Is Curtailing Students' Moped Use

Posted Monday, August 27, 2012 --- 7:00 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- University of Wisconsin transportation officials are putting new restrictions on students' moped use.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/Npq84x ) they are ending the practice of students riding between classes by requiring owners to apply for parking in one of 52 campus lots starting Sept. 1. They could face a $40 ticket.

Previously, a moped parking permit earned an owner access to any moped parking space on campus.

UW Transportation Services Director Patrick Kass says the new rule is to get moped owners to park in one place and walk or ride buses between buildings.

University officials say the policy will make UW safer and less congested, but riders say it makes their mopeds "obsolete."

Sophomore Anthony Winchell says he uses his moped to get to places on time.

If you are a cyclist, there are some interesting "power assist" devices to add to your bike. Maybe a loophole...

Yeah you're right Carly, it's so lazy of me to work 15 hours a week at the hospital in addition to my full time student status. Shame on my "innatentive idiot, headphone wearing self" for using a moped as a means to get the most out of my 24 hours each day. Careful with your rash generalizations, not everyone uses their lightning fast scooters to "impress" pedestrian bystanders, and most of us don't enjoy crashing, so to say we don't care about our own safety or that of others is nonsense. I'll qualify with you and agree that the intersections on Charter can be a free for all, but what's the difference between a cyclist weaving through the stream of crossing students and a moped? Purely mass? Either way a collision will most likely yield injuries. So to single out mopeds isn't fair. Gosh I should have planned better, again, so lazy of me...

Brad: Maybe you didn't read my whole post...I went through it...I know what it's like to try and schedule classes at the UW. It ain't brain surgery. The main portion of campus hasn't grown much over the past few decades; how'd students get along before mopeds got so popular? Carly: I agree with you 110%.

As a UW student, I wholeheartedly support this new rule. Walking to classes, I, and other students, have been thisclose to almost being hit by mopeds being driven by helmet-less, inattentive idiots...wearing headphones, talking to their friend over their shoulder, or trying to "impress" everyone by zipping though gaps in pedestrians who have the right of way by signal in the crosswalk. This campus is far to crowed with pedestrian traffic to allow a fleet of moped riders who don't care about their own safety, let alone others. I ride the bus everyday - it's not that crowded. It's called planning, folks. You don't sign up for a class at Humanities 5 minutes after your class at Engineering gets done. It pretty much is coming down to laziness for this kids, and they don't want to give that up.

Not everyone is as perfect as you, "NAME"

Eric and Name, what you're completely overlooking is that scheduling classes isn't always a perfect fitting puzzle for proximity. Those of us who are req'd to take classes that are only offered in the fall or spring semester with one possible time slot don't always have the option of choosing classes that are located in a convenient cluster. In a utopic world, yes it would work that way, and everyone's first choices on their class wishlists would be granted by a badger genie. But that's NOT how it works, and busses aren't always on time, so yes "Name", it is easy to blame someone else when you are tapping your foot at the bus stop. I could go on all day about the "frightening" public service announcement made by UW police, and the faulty logic in increasing cost for the permit from $80 to $120 for less parking real estate, but once again I find myself fighting an argument where logic and reason apparently don't apply. And as far as bike safety goes, the cyclists are the ones blatantly cruising through red lights, not mopeds, I thought red meant stop? So much for all the green "safety stop zones" being made for cyclists.

I firmly believe bicycles make more sense for students than mopeds. They're cheaper, require no gas and take up less space. Bikes are almost always a much faster option than busing or driving/riding a moped. "The campus is so physically spread out." Give me a break! The Madison campus can be crossed in 5-10 minutes by bike; it's only three miles from end to end!

For a university that touts itself as having so many "smart" people, I wonder how UW can make so many dumb decisions/policies, this one included. I hope that all the uninformed, ignorant, liberal students get a taste of government gone wild, albeit on a small scale.

I agree with "Name". Went there for 5 years, never had a moped either. Never was late to class, except for if I overslept. You CAN make it from one end to the other in the 20 minute passing time...you just can't stop for Starbucks in between. Yes, some of the buses are full, but half the time you can beat the bus. And unless it's pouring out, what's wrong with walking or biking? Sally, did you ever think your daughter might be exaggerating just a bit? I will agree that this IS a GREAT Madison idea (sans the sarcasm). Maybe your daughter should plan her schedule a bit better so she doesn't have classes on the opposite ends one after the other.

Went to the UW all four years. Never had a moped, never rode the bus. Schedule your classes so you have TIME! Not hard to do, but much easier to blame someone else for why your rear is not in that seat when class starts.
