Wis. DNR: Mississippi River is open for duck hunt

Posted Tuesday, October 8, 2013 --- 9:39 a.m.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- The federal government shutdown is creating some confusion for duck hunters interested in venturing into the Upper Mississippi National Fish and Wildlife Refuge when waterfowl season reopens this weekend.

The federal government has closed its 561 refuges.

But the La Crosse Tribune reports that Wisconsin officials are telling hunters the Mississippi River is open for recreational activities as long as they enter from a state or private boat launch.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources chief warden Randy Stark says in news release that the only change hunters should notice is that federal access points are closed. He says otherwise, it's business as usual.
