Wis. officials conducting license plate survey

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Transportation is taking photos of license plates in an effort to see if unregistered vehicles or expired registration is a problem.

WLUK-TV reports the state has hired a private contractor to take pictures of plates, which will then be put into a database.

It's part of a three-part study. The first entails collecting license plate info from 2,200 vehicles in eight counties. They will then mail surveys to 500 homes.

Finally, the results will be studied with a goal of making the registration process more convenient and cost-effective.

DOT Motor Vehicle Program Specialist Vikki VanDeventer says the survey isn't meant to catch people with expired registration. She says they won't be penalized.

A report with the survey results are expected by next summer.
