AUBURNDALE, Wis. (AP) -- A freight train crashed into a minivan on railroad tracks in the town of Auburndale and killed the Marshfield high School teacher in the vehicle.

Wood County Coroner Garry Kronstedt scheduled an autopsy in the death of 37-year-old Troy Schmitt of Colby.

Schmitt died in the early morning hours Friday when his minivan was hit by the westbound Wisconsin Central Ltd. train.

He had been a social studies teacher at Marshfield since August 1997 and taught government and advanced placement classes.

Marshfield Superintendent Bruce King said the mood was somber after students and staff learned of the accident, which remained under investigation.
