OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- Construction of an electrified 'stun' fence is underway at the Oshkosh Correctional Institution.
It's one of 13 medium- and maximum-security correctional facilities in Wisconsin that will get the security upgrade as part of a $4 million project approved by the state Building Commission in 2005.
The electrified fences provide a shock that will repel or knock down an inmate trying to escape before they reach the razor wire.
OSCI Warden Judy Smith says she expects installation to be complete in the next month. She says the prison security practices will remain the same, including staffing of the watch towers.
