AUBURNDALE, Wis. (AP) -- A popular Marshfield High School teacher whose minivan was hit by a freight train died from the impact.
Results of an autopsy showed that 37-year-old Troy Schmitt was alive when the Wisconsin Central train struck the minivan at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.
A crash report indicates the vehicle was parked on a railroad track 20 feet off the roadway with its lights off and facing an oncoming train.
Investigators are still investigating whether Schmitt parked the minivan or inadvertently drove onto the tracks.
Wood County Deputy Coroner Charles Evans says Schmitt was at a fish fry Thursday until about 10:30 p.m. in Marshfield with other teachers, but teachers say Schmitt did not have much to drink.
