Merrimac Ferry Shuts Down Due to Cold, Ice

Posted Friday, December 5, 2008 --- 7:00 a.m.

MERRIMAC, Wis. (AP) -- The free ferry that carries Highway 113 traffic across the Wisconsin River at Merrimac is shutting down for winter.

The state Department of Transportation set the closing at 6 p.m. Thursday because of ice on the river.

The Colsac III resumes operations when warmer weather melts the river ice.

That normally occurs when spring arrives.

But two years ago, unusually warm weather allowed the ferry to resume operations at the start of January 2007 -- a month after it shut down for the season. Cold weather later returned and the ferry ceased operations for the rest of the winter.
