UPDATE: Two Dead in Car-Semi Crash Near Shawano

UPDATED Wednesday, August 5, 2009 --- 10:00 a.m.

SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) -- Two people who died in a collision between their car and a semitrailer truck have been identified Wednesday as an elderly Shiocton couple.

Seventy-nine-year-old John Carpenter and his 78-year-old wife, Betty Carpenter, died at the scene of the crash Tuesday afternoon on Highway 29 west of Shawano.

Witnesses told Shawano County sheriff's investigators the car failed to stop for traffic when crossing the highway at an intersection.

The 72-year-old Rice Lake man driving the semi wasn't hurt.

SHAWANO, Wis. (AP) -- Two people are dead after a car collided with a semi-truck on Wisconsin Highway 29 west of Shawano.

The victims are a man and a woman. Their names were not immediately released.

Emergency crews were called to the crash about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of the highway. It remains under investigation.
