UPDATE Animals seized from shelter up for adoption soon

UPDATED Wednesday, June 4, --- 9:07 p.m.

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- Officials say animals seized from a southeastern Wisconsin shelter last week should go up for adoption soon.

Angela Speed of the Wisconsin Humane Society says she hopes the animals are available for adoption in the next couple of weeks.

Police seized about 90 animals from Orphan Kanines in Caledonia and two area homes.

The Journal Times reports about half of the seized dogs are being kept at a temporary shelter in Racine. That location is currently not open to the public. Other seized dogs are being kept at the Wisconsin Humane Society's Racine, Milwaukee and Ozaukee campuses.

Owners of two of the dogs have come forward and should be able to bring them home soon.

The owner of Orphan Kanines has since relinquished ownership of the animals that were seized.

CALEDONIA, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities in southeastern Wisconsin are removing animals from an animal rescue operation.

Caledonia police say the shelter is under investigation for allegedly housing too many animals and having unsafe conditions.

The Journal Times reports police went Thursday morning to Orphan Kanines.

Police Lt. Gary Larsen says the initial count of animals was 57 dogs, 10 cats and one pig.

Wisconsin Humane Society spokeswoman Angela Speed says conditions at the shelter "are absolutely deplorable." The Humane Society was called in to assist.

Several police officers going into Orphan Kanines were dressed in protective jumpsuits with oxygen masks.

Attorney Jerry Delcore, representing the family who owns the property, declined to comment and said the family also did not wish to comment.
