Approval High-Capacity Wells Angers Neighbors of Dairy Farmers

Posted: Sunday, March 31, 2013 --- 7:44 p.m.

RICHFIELD, Wis. (AP) -- Neighbors of a proposed dairy farm in central Wisconsin are questioning whether Wisconsin officials are doing their jobs after the state approved high-capacity wells for the industrial-size facility.

Residents say the state Department of Natural Resources did an incomplete environmental analysis. They want the DNR to deny the well permit. But the agency says state laws limit its authority to consider the cumulative impact of wells on nearby waterways.

A Wisconsin State Journal report (http://bit.ly/16qtCc4 ) says the permit is for a proposed 4,300-cow dairy in the Town of Richfield, on the Adams-Waushara County border.

Neighbors say the high-capacity wells will draw too much water from nearby lakes. But officials with Milk Source Holdings, which would build the farm, say computer models show the effects on waterways would be minimal.
