Changes in Waukesha County's Election Night Reporting

Posted Tuesday, April 24, 2012 --- 10:48 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Government Accountability Board is pushing Waukesha County's municipal clerks to file election night results electronically after the county's long delays in reporting results of the April 3 spring election.

Electronic reporting of unofficial returns isn't currently required by state law on election night. But, it's a tool that municipalities in Waukesha County are being asked to use. It will eliminate the need for the clerks to travel to the county's courthouse on election night. They will still be required to take the official results to the courthouse by 4 p.m. the next day.

Accountability Board director Kevin Kennedy says several Wisconsin county clerks are successfully forwarding unofficial returns electronically.

Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus has handed off her election duties in the upcoming recalls to her deputy clerk.
