UPDATE: Wis. Air Show Canceled After Blue Angels Grounded

UPDATED Wednesday, May 1, 2013 --- 2:57 p.m.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) -- Organizers have canceled an air show planned in western Wisconsin after federal budget cuts grounded the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels.

The Blue Angels were to headline the Chippewa Valley Air Show this September. But the military grounded its jet and demonstration teams because of automatic federal budget cuts.

Matt Hill, chief operating officer for the Chippewa Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, says the decision to cancel the air show was made at a meeting Tuesday night. The organization planned to operate the event at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport.

Hill tells the Leader-Telegram the decision is disappointing to the Scouts. Hill says the Boy Scouts will apply to bring a different military jet team to the area in 2014 or 2015.

From our news partner WEAU in Eau Claire:

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (CHIPPEWA VALLEY AIRSHOW NEWS RELEASE)--The Chippewa Valley Airshow, scheduled for September 7-8, 2013 announced this morning that the US Navy Blue Angels will not be flying at the show this year.

Last evening, US Navy Blue Angel #8 reached out to show organizers to let them know that the scheduled appearance by the jet team in September was highly unlikely.

The US Navy Blue Angels show season has been in limbo for months due to budget uncertainties resulting from the threat of sequestration and its impact on military participation in upcoming shows.

Under sequestration, all US military jet teams are grounded for non-essential flights until further notice, and additional military support for air shows is suspended as well. Today, the US Navy Blue Angels officially cancelled their entire show season.

“It is disappointing that the Blue Angels have cancelled their 2013 airshow schedule,” said Matt Hill, Scout Executive for the Chippewa Valley Council of the Boy Scouts. “We would like to thank our entire Airshow Committee for all the hard work they had already put in to make this year’s show a success.”

As for the future of this year’s Chippewa Valley airshow, that remains up in the air. “We will meet as an Executive Committee on April 30th to render our final decision on the future of the 2013 airshow,” said Hill.

The Chippewa Valley Airshow is scheduled to take place September 7-8, 2013 at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport and is produced and sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America-Chippewa Valley Council.
