UPDATE: Chippewa, EPA set meeting on Gogebic mine

UPDATED Friday, July 18, 2014 ---- 8:08 a.m.

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) -- The six tribes of Wisconsin's Chippewa Federation will meet with federal environmental officials next month to outline their objections to Gogebic Taconite's mining plans in the Lake Superior region.

The tribes sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency at the end of May asking officials to invoke a section of the Clean Water Act to stop Gogebic's mining exploration in northern Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio News says the EPA and tribes have a meeting scheduled Aug. 16 in Traverse City, Mich.

Bad River Chairman Mike Wiggins says the state's mining laws don't protect the environment. He says EPA intervention would allow federal regulators to gather information at the proposed site.

Gogebic spokesman Bob Seitz says the company wants to continue exploring the mining site.

ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) -- Six Chippewa Indian tribes are asking federal environmental regulators to review the proposed iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin.

The tribes say the proposed mine in Ashland and Iron counties would pollute waters downstream to Lake Superior. The Chippewa are asking the Environmental Protection Agency to take a look at potential effects before Gogebic Taconite's project is reviewed by state regulators and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Wisconsin Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/1jUF2Ks0 ) says tribal officials are asking the EPA to invoke part of the Clean Water Act that stopped a multi-billion dollar mine in Alaska.

The tribes include Red Cliff, Bad River, Lac du Flambeau, St. Croix, Sokoagon and Lac Courte Oreilles.
