Connectivity Issues Turned Into Tourism Promotion In Southwest Wisconsin

Posted Tuesday, May 15, 2012 --- 6:45 a.m.

NEW GLARUS, Wis. (AP) -- Southwest Wisconsin has some issues with cellphone and broadband service because of its hilly terrain. And, a tourism promoter is turning that negative into a positive.

Dave Decker is executive director of the Tri-State Tourism Council, which also includes parts of Iowa and Illinois. Decker is urging tourism businesses to promote technology-free getaways. Leave the gadgets behind and go for a hike or a bike ride.

Mike Nevil owns the Chalet Landhaus Inn in New Glarus. Nevil says a woman staying at his hotel recently became upset because she couldn't get a cellphone connection. But, by the end of her visit she was happy with the lack of connectivity. Nevil tells the Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/JAhY4j ) the woman said her stay was more relaxing.
