UPDATE: Superior police officer back on duty during probe

UPDATED Thursday, July 15, 2014 --- 3:20 p.m.

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) -- A Superior police officer is back on duty while an investigation continues into whether he used excessive force in arresting a woman.

The Superior Police Department said Tuesday that Officer George Gothner was placed on administrative duty last Thursday. Gothner had been on paid administrative leave since late January.

The state is investigating whether Gothner used excessive force in arresting Natasha Lancour, which was caught on camera in January. Lancour is charged with disorderly conduct, but her trial is on hold until the investigation of Gothner is complete.

WDIO-TV (http://bit.ly/1oFhfzJ ) reports police say the investigation is taking longer than expected. Gothner was placed on administrative duty, working on response plans to critical incidents. Police say he will not return to patrol duty, pending the decision of the assigned special prosecutor.

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Justice will review accusations of excessive force during a police officer's arrest in Superior.

Officer George Gothner has been on paid administrative leave since he was seen on dash cam video punching a woman in the face during the arrest. The video shows Gothner struggling with Natasha Lancour as he tried to arrest her outside the Keyport Lounge Jan. 5. Gother says Lancour was resisting and was scratching him in the face. Lancour is charged in Douglas County with battery of an officer and disorderly conduct. She says she was doing nothing wrong when Gother approached her and cursed.

WDIO-TV reports Superior Police Chief Charles LaGesse says it would be in the best interest of everyone for the state to oversee the investigation.
