MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Democratic state Rep. Cory Mason is urging members of the Legislature's budget committee to undo some of the cuts in funding to public schools, technical colleges and the University of Wisconsin System made in 2011.

Mason made the comments at the start of a Joint Finance Committee briefing Thursday on Gov. Scott Walker's latest budget.

Mason says Walker's budget places too much of an emphasis on private voucher schools and doesn't do enough for public schools. Walker's budget increases spending on vouchers and allows the program to grow outside of Milwaukee and Racine.

But his budget does not allow public school spending to increase.

Republican committee co-chair Rep. John Nygren says past funding decisions shouldn't be rehashed and instead lawmakers should be focused on how to improve education moving forward.
