Detention for Students Who Walked Out of Class

RHINELANDER, Wis. (AP) -- Rhinelander High School administrators say the students who walked out of class last week to protest teacher layoffs will be given detention for their actions, but they won't be suspended.

About 70 students walked out of the high school for a few hours last Wednesday to show support for four teachers who were given layoff notices because of a $2 million dollar budget shortfall.

Rhinelander High School Associate Principal David Ditzler tells Wisconsin Public Radio News administrators are hoping to meet with each student individually to discuss disciplinary actions, which he says will likely include a few hours of detention after school next week.

One student says they walked out because they wanted their teachers to know that they "have someone who will stick up for them."
