Dozens of Police Cameras Planned for La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- La Crosse police hope a web of surveillance cameras in the downtown area will help catch criminals and deter crime.

The La Crosse City Vision Foundation is trying to raise $475,000 to help police install 41 cameras that will continually record activity downtown. To some it feels like `big brother' is watching. Resident Ryan Hyland says downtown businesses already have their own cameras.

But, Police Chief Ron Tischer says his officers don't have the time to constantly monitor activity. He says they will be clearly marked as police surveillance cameras and will be focused on streets, alleys, sidewalks and parking ramps.
